OREGON ROCK ART
WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR VISITING LAST UPDATE 12/2013
This site is designed to acquaint visitors with the diversity of Oregon rock art. Petroglyphs and pictographs exist in great abundance in much of Oregon. They represent a priceless and irreplaceable heritage inherited from peoples who occupied the territory, now called Oregon, for thousands of years before the migration of Europeans.
Rock art exists all over the world; any where humans have inhabited, they have intentionally left marks on stone. The interpretation of those petroglyphs and pictographs is a vast and open ended study. For those interested, Russel's book, Understanding Meaning and Purpose of Rock Art is an attempt to bring the many ideas about it into perspective.
Avocational archaeologists LeeAnn Johnston and D. Russel Micnhimer have spent many years exploring rock art sites in Oregon. Their photographs of pictographs and petroglyphs are exhibited in the gallery here with the belief that their display will increase the appreciation and preservation of Oregon rock art. It is hoped that it will be a valuable resource for future rock art researchers and a source of pleasure for those who will never have the pleasure of visiting the sites in person. Before visiting any rock art site, please be familiar with proper behavior during your visit. Their work has recently been supported in part by Loring and Loring Grants from the Oregon Archaeological Society. Russel built this website to share the images they have obtained. LeeAnn is engaged in an on going album construction project with printed pictures that matches drawings made by Malcolm and Louise Loring in their inventory of Oregon rock art during the last century. Digital copies of her album are available here. As their work is ongoing, new photographs of pictographs and petroglyphs will be added to the site periodically. If you would like to be notified when this occurs or have photos to share or questions please click here. In 2010 they published a guide book, WHERE TO SEE ROCK ART WASHINGTON OREGON IDAHO . In 2011 Russel wrote and published a book called Understanding the Meaning and Purpose of Rock Art.
